Rajiv Masillamoni together with Laurent Chenot tried to preserve this fishes but the fishes were too inbred and would not breed. The male did not build a bubblenest and did not even know hoow too wrap around the female. The female anyhow would breed. Rajiv and Laurent did many spawns with petshop fish and fishes of various lines.

One of the cross they did with was a female from Delaval while the male was black double tail from American line. Fishes from this spawn was named R39. Male of R39 were bred to all of the females from Rajiv Masillamoni and Laurent Chenot. Now some fishes from these crosses showed the caudal fin of 180 degree.

Laurent Chenot and Rajiv Masillamoni continued breeding very hard. They got a few fishes that have tail spread to 180 degree from some spawns and later they got a few from almost every spawn. They kept putting the best genes into fishes. Some of those fishes were send over the Atlantic.

In 1991 an American breeder named Jeff Wilson joined the team. When Jeff first saw the first fishes he named it "Halfmoon"

In 1993 the first Halfmoon went into show at IBC convention in Tampa, Florida under the name of
`CHENMASWIL'. It won the best of show, making Halfmoon the most sought after fishes among betta enthusiasts around the
world since then.

Now you may not wonder why Halfmoon has never been sold in Pet shops any where in the world for the last decade. It is true that if you breed halfmoon to halfmoon you never get 100 % halfmoon but maybe less than 10%. Some said they got 40 % halfmoon out of a spawn but some said they got less than 5 %. The rest of them will be super-delta and delta and the amount of each type will varies depending on mom and dad quality. There is a method that you can raise super delta from this batch to be halfmoon. The secret behind this is to take water quality, food, container and its surrounding into account.

I specified my fishes as halfmoon only when they have a caudal spread of 180 degree. No matter how many ray branching , but the perfect one should be of 16 which I never seen one. But none of a halfmoon fish has only 2 rays branching. My super-delta Halfmoon must have the caudal spread of between 120-179 degree while the delta will have a caudal spread between 90-120 degree.
